WEBCAST: Part II: California's Green Chemistry: The Regulations are Coming!

October 6, 2010

The State of California is now prepared to seek public comments on, and thereafter finalize, the regulations that will implement the sweeping new "Green Chemistry" program. The law gives the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) wide-ranging tools to regulate products, including the imposition of labels, restrictions on use, end-of-life management, and even outright bans. The agency's aim is to adopt final regulations by December 31, 2010. The pending regulations will set up a process for the DTSC to systematically identify and rank chemicals and consumer products based on their risk to human health and the environment. Manufacturers of targeted consumer products containing "chemicals of concern" will be required to analyze alternatives to producing a safer product, with fewer impacts.
